Tusken Riaders, Tuskens or more commonly known as simply “Sand People” are the brutish inhabitants of the desserts on the planet Tatooine. Described as primitive sentients indigenous to Tatooine it is referenced in the original trilogy that Tuskens are a different species than humans and it is believed they share a common ancestor with the Jawas. Avoided by the moisture farmers on the outskirts of the developed cities under Jabba the Hutt’s rule, the raiders are known for their violent and sadistic nature toward regular humans. To display any part of their flesh was seen as a disgrace in Tusken culture, thus the tan fabric covering their entire body. They first appeared in the Star Wars movies in Episode II when they attacked the Lars moisture farm and kidnapped Anakin Skywalkers mother, Shmi Skywalker Lars. Torturing her but keeping her alive, Anakin was able to sense her pain in his dreams. Traveling to his home planet with Padme Amidala, he finds his mother held hostage in a Tusken Raider Camp. Dying shortly after their reunion from her injuries, Anakin crazed with grief, slaughters the Tusken camp and all of its inhabitants. They appear again in Episode 4 when they attacked Luke Skywalker and exiled Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Escaping, Ben Kenobi was able to tell Luke about the fate of his father and his potential to become a Jedi. Thus, the Tusken hold a special place in the history of many of the main characters in the Star Wars main story.
