Introduced as the protector of the earth realm and consequent recruiter of combatants for the mortal kombat trials, Raiden is as iconic as the fighters he leads. One of the original seven playable characters in the first game in the series, this character has been a staple since Mortal Kombat’s inception in 1992. He has been featured in every game since except Mortal Kombat 3, but being a central player in the cannon universe, he was included in the crossover Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. His credits continue as he has been featured in two movie adaptations and a TV series, highlighting his origins and role in the Mortal Kombat franchise. Appointed as the God of thunder (taking inspiration from the Japanese god of thunder Raijin) after his second defeat of Shinnok he became an eternal, powerful elder god. Particularly enigmatic his immortality causes rifts between his logic and that of the other mortal fighters. His powers include the ability to teleport, fly and, of course, control thunder and lightning. While he can travel as formless pure energy, while in his human form he looks like an older man with stark white hair, robes and a signature straw hat. When choosing a character to emulate, a Raiden costume is an excellent choice for the new or novice cosplayer.
