Snow White originated as a German fairy tale that has gained popularity all across the world. Published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812, this tale of a beautiful fair skinned, dark haired beauty has captivated audiences for literally, hundreds of years. How may Disney princesses can say that? While some iconic elements, such as the seven dwarves names, were not added until the 1900’s the key story elements of the poison apple, magic mirror and evil stepmother have been around since Snow White’s inception. Beginning with the Queen of the land pricking her finger on a sewing needle and remarking on the stark contrast of her own blood against the white snow all around her, “Oh how I wish that I had a daughter that had skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as black as ebony.” With a pre-conception introduction like this, how could Snow White not inspire generations of adoration. With the Disney adaptation Snow White’s iconic black short hair and yellow dress became an icon among young girls desperately wishing that their song would attract cute little birds. For those of us who grew up on this animated feature, its difficult to not think about Snow Shite without hearing that famous chorus of “Hi-Hooooo.”
