Morticia Addams is the gorgeous mother of night and loving wife to Gomez Adams, mother to Wednesday, Pugsley and Pubert Addams, and general caretaker of Fester Addams, Grandmama, Thing and Lurch. She has been the icon of the gothic movement for almost a century since her creation in 1938. As a character, she has been portrayed by in a live action setting by the lovely Carolyn Jones and the bewitching Angelica Huston. As described by her creator cartoonist Charles Addams, the family is an ‘inversion’ of the typical american dream family unit. Describing them all in turn, Charles is quoted as saying “Gomez and Pugsley are enthusiastic. Morticia is even in disposition, muted, witty, sometimes deadly. Grandma Frump is foolishly good-natured. Wednesday is her mother’s daughter. A closely knit family, the real head being Morticia—although each of the others is a definite character—except for Grandma, who is easily led. Many of the troubles they have as a family are due to Grandma’s fumbling, weak character. The house is a wreck, of course, but this is a house-proud family just the same and every trap door is in good repair. Money is no problem.”
Cresting your own Morticia Addams Costume will be relatively simple. The two main iconic things about her are her long black dress and long straight black hair. Secondary costume items include her long blood red fingernails, red lipstick and pallid complexion. Whatever interpretation you decide to pursue, one thing is always consistent, her macabre sense of humor and emotionless facial expressions.
