Created by George Miller and Byron Kennedy, the Mad Max franchise had been widely accepted as a cult classic since it’s first installment titled simply “Mad Max” in 1979. Debuting with the hunky 23 year old Mel Gibson in the lead role of Max Rockatansky, this series helped jump start Gibson’s career. Introduced in a post-apocalyptic Australia where resources are limited, he is part of the Main Force Patrol, a police-like force that attempts to keep things in check by engaging in high speed car chases throughout the Australian dessert. Living in a time where civilization is crumbling in the aftermath of a global war, Max leaves his badge behind to take care of his wife and son. When the small family is stalked by a notoriously brutal biker gang, he is unable to stop the murder of his wife and infant son. Becoming Mad with grief he murderers all of the bikers and so ending the first movie and solidifying his nickname of Mad Max. Mel Gibson returns in (in or opinion the best of the original trilogy movies) Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior circa 1981 to help a group of people survive against the S&M onslaught of spring criminals. Finally in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome circa 1985 he is contracted to kill a dangerous combination of a dwarf and a colossus named Master-Blaster, by a woman named Aunty Entity, who he finds is the corrupt ruler of a dessert city named Bartertown. Meeting a cargo cult of children in the desert he must take over barter town to save it’s people. The series continues 30 years later under the director George Miller with Mad Max: Fury Road circa 2015. This time with Tom Hardy playing the stoic hero Mad Max partnered with the acting talent of Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, and Hugh Keays-Byrne.
That moment when you notice that the Tom Hardy Mad Max is wearing both the knee brace and a much more grimy version of the one sleeve jacket from Mad Max: Road Warrior! Don’t you love cosplaying 🙂
