Kingpin, real name Wilson Fisk, is the crime lord and main antagonist in Marvel’s comic Daredevil. Controlling all of the illegal activity in the New York slum known as Hell’s Kitchen, he becomes the main enemy of the young Matt Murdock after arranging the murder of his father. Daredevil is known as “the man without fear” created by part of the dynamic duo, Stan Lee and artist Bill Everett, it has been revealed that there was an “unspecified” amount of input from Jack Kirby. While several artists worked on the title, Daredevil was largely a small character until the work of Frank Miller put him on the map in Marvel Titles. This character has inspired generations since his first appearance in April 1964. Since the release of Daredevil number one, this savior of Hell’s Kitchen, a crime riddled neighborhood in New York City, has been a fan favorite due to his inclusion of a blind character in the Marvel Universe. Murdock, now under the guise of Daredevil seeks out his fathers murders and exacts his own kind of justice. Namely, setting them up so he can prosecute then in his day job, a lawyer. As the story with any extraordinary individual goes, when justice becomes stronger so does the opposing crime. In the comics Daredevil’s two top enemies include Bullseye, a man with deadly aim and accuracy, and the crime boss of Hell’s Kitchen, Kingpin. Three live-action adaptations have been made for the Kingpin character. The first was a TV show in 1989 where Kingpin was portrayed by the one-of-a-kind John Rhys-Davies in a mash up series between Daredevil and David Banner as The Hulk. Second, was the moderately-received movie premiering in 2003 with a 320 pound Michael Clarke Duncan playing the hulking muscle that was Kingpin. Then, more recently Netflix has produced their own TV series of Daredevil casting acclaimed actor, Vincent D’Onofrio, detailing his journey to become a ruthless criminal businessmen.
The popular Netflix series introduced Kingpin as a child, played by actor Cole Jensen. Growing up in Hell’s Kitchen he has a kind and nurturing mother, Marlene Vistain, who tries to shield him from his alcoholic abusive father, Bill Fisk. One particularly bad night, young Wilson defends his mother from the attacks of his father, killing him with a hammer. He and his mother dispose of Bill’s body piece by piece, night after night in the city’s polluted river. Living with relatives for the rest of his upbringing, he becomes a shrewd businessman with corrupt ties to crime organizations such as the Triad, the Yakuza, the Russian mob, and members from the local police department. Together with his number two, James Wesley, they take over all of the crime in Hell’s Kitchen “remaking it in their own image.”
