Fester Addams is the behemoth long lost brother of Gomez Addams. As such he is the brother in-law of Morticia Addams and uncle to Wednesday, Pugsley and Pubert Addams. He lives in the twisted mansion with the family, their trusted butler Lurch, Morticia’s mother grandmama, and the family pet Thing. The hit 1991 movie centers around Fester being lost in the Bermuda triangle and found by a crazed mother who uses his amnesia to her benefit manipulating him into believing that he is her son and becoming a deadly con-man team. After he regains his memory he is again a central character in the second film adaptation. This time he falls for the nanny played by Joan Cusack, who is a professional black widow. As a character, Fester has been portrayed by in a live action setting by Jackie Coogan and Christopher Lloyd. Described by his creator cartoonist Charles Addams, the family is an ‘inversion’ of the typical american dream family unit. Describing them all in turn, Charles is quoted as saying “Gomez and Pugsley are enthusiastic. Morticia is even in disposition, muted, witty, sometimes deadly. Grandma Frump is foolishly good-natured. Wednesday is her mother’s daughter. A closely knit family, the real head being Morticia—although each of the others is a definite character—except for Grandma, who is easily led. Many of the troubles they have as a family are due to Grandma’s fumbling, weak character. The house is a wreck, of course, but this is a house-proud family just the same and every trap door is in good repair. Money is no problem.” Fester specifically was described (again by Charles Addams) as a “Uncle Fester is incorrigible and except for the good nature of the family and the ignorance of the police, would ordinarily be under lock and key … the eyes are pig-like and deeply embedded … he likes to fish, but usually employs dynamite … he keeps falcons on the roof which he uses for hunting … his one costume … summer and winter … is a black great coat with an enormous collar … he is fat with pudgy little hands and feet.”
Cresting your own Fester Addams Costume will be relatively simple. The iconic thing about fester is his bald head and long black robe-like garb. In the feature films they add an subtly inhuman feature to fester in that they make his shoulders perpendicular to his head, creating the illusion that he does not have a neck. Whatever interpretation you decide to pursue, one thing is always consistent, his bizarre humor and assortment of deadly trinkets that he always carries with him.
