The once gifted district attorney of Gotham City with a unique sense of justice, Harvey Dent descended into insanity when a mob boss attacked him with acid that left the left side of his face disfigured. He then takes the name “Two-Face” and dispenses good or evil based on the outcome of a coin toss. Batman creator Bob Kane credits the character Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for the inspiration of Two-Face. As Two-Face, Harvey Dent uses his extensive legal knowledge and familiarity to the criminal underworld to become a mob boss. As he continues to lose a hold of himself he develops a second personality for his disfigured half. He becomes obsessed with duality and plans his robbery locations, times, and weapons around the number two. Such as robbing the Second Bank of Gotham at 22:22 military time while wielding two .22 handguns. Two-Face also begins to have an obsession with his coin determining fate. He lets the coin decide if he is to do good or evil and relies on it to make important decisions for him. The following is a general guide line for creating your own Two-Face costume.
Even though Two-Face’s character and origins of his disfigurement changes depending on the comic, show or movie, he always has a general appearance that most works abide by. The first and most important of which is the disfigurement of the left side of his face. Whether the disfigurement is caused by acid like in the original Detective Comics or by fire like in the Dark Knight, half his face is always grotesque and in some works the burns extend to the other parts of his body such as his hands like in Batman: The Animated Series. Another equally important part of his overall character is his two-headed coin where one side of the coin is usually damaged to reflect Two-Face himself. And finally, his clothes are sometimes depicted as also being split in half with two distinct sides such as his attire in Batman Forever.
