The Scarecrow is an age old villain in the Batman Universe. He was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger and first appeared in the comic series World’s Finest Comics number three, published in September 1941. Real name Dr. Jonathan Crane, Ph.D. he was a clinical psychologist who changed from physician to patient. An expert in the study of fear mechanisms and psychological and psychiatric relationships between the fear response and the human psyche, he devoted his life to all things that evokes a fear response. A consistent enemy in the Batman universe, he uses a variety of toxins and aerosol sprays to induce hallucinations in his enemies of their worst fears. As a character, he has been made recently popular by his leading role as the main villain in the final installment of Rocksteady’s award winning Arkham game franchise. Here he holds the entire city of Gotham hostage as he prepares to release his latest weapon called the “cloud burst” which will release his newest fear toxin formula in an aerial disbursement that could threaten the entire eastern coast of the fictional U.S.
Creating your own Scarecrow costume will be intensive but completely worth it. We recommend coupling this costume with a fellow Batman character, or for a more sadistic twist, with a fellow Barbara Gordon cosplayer. For the purpose of this article we will highlight both the DC Universe Scarecrow villain character as well as the general halloween farm creepiness that is the demented scarecrow figure.
