Naruto is both the name of the hit Japanese manga series and the main character of that series. Created by Masashi Kishimoto, the concept for this series was released in 1997 with a single issue publication in the magazine Akamaru Jump. Gaining enough popularity to jump start the series as a weekly publication in the well-known Shōnen Jump magazine, the adventures of Naruto and his friends continued from 1999 to 2014. After the 72 manga volumes produced, the series was adapted into a massively popular TV show that premiered across Asia in 2002. In addition to the original series 220 episode run, ten movie adaptations have been released, a spin off series titled Naruto: Shippuden has been produced since 2007 and many other forms of media adaptations have been created. These include novels, video games and internationally known trading card games. For the western audiences, Naruto crossed the pond to premiere as a TV series in 2005, with Naruto: Shippuden released in 2009. A massively popular franchise, the Naruto title has sold over 400 million manga copies, making it the third best-selling manga series in publication history. The english series awards include the Quill Award in 2006 and several USA today booklist appearances.
The story chronicles the adventures and lives of several young ninjas as they learn the art of ninjutsu and follow their dreams. All is not merely that simple as they discover other who seek power for the wrong reasons, and the treachery that those with power are capable of. Naruto, begins by seeking to become the Hokage, or the leader of his village who is recognized as the strongest ninja of all. With a unique balance between the comedic anime elements and intense battles, this series has been an icon of western anime adaptations since its release.
