Frank Castle, born Frank Castiglione is the main character in the Marvel publication called The Punisher. Created by Gerry Conway, John Romita and Ross Andru, this a tragic antihero was given life by bring named by the one and only Stan Lee. Premiering in 1974, Castle was a guest character in the Amazing Spider Man comic number 129. After the brutal slaughter of his wife and two children during a mob shoot-out, Frank Castle creates an alter ego to deal with the pain. In the live-action movie, he does this by putting away his badge and forsakes being a police officer to exact his own brand of justice. In the original comic story, he is a U.S. war veteran who excelled in stealth tactics, martial arts, and guerrilla warfare. As The Punisher he is described as a “vigilante who employs murder, kidnapping, extortion, coercion, threats of violence, and torture in his war on crime.” He vows to exact revenge on all of the crime in his city of New York, creating a one-man army against the mob that took everything form him. In his own comic story arc, he begins with the criminals who murdered his family using his military training.
