“I’m Poison…Poison Ivy!” With this introduction in the live action adaptation of Batman and Robin the entire world knew exactly who Poison Ivy was. Real name Dr. Pamela Lillian Isley, she was created as a foremost environmental advocate and eco terrorist in the Batman Universe. Using pheromones and plant based toxins she controls part of Gotham’s crime underbelly. In constant opposition to Batman and Robin, she often works with her best friend in the comics, Harley Quinn. In some of the side comics, she is written in as Bruce Wayne’s love interest, with her first kiss bring poison and the second being the anecdote, creating a romantic tension between the two characters. Created in 1966, she is the Batman villain with the closest backstory to gaining superpowers. With the rise of the feminist movement she replaced Catwoman in many comics as an equally formidable foe for the dynamic duo. This movement also brought slight changes to her outfit, although she has retained the same key features of long red hair and a green tight fitting bodysuit for over 50 years. As a character she was ranked number 64 on IGN’s Top 100 Comic Book Villains of All Time and number 21 on Comics Buyer’s Guide’s “100 Sexiest Women in Comics.” Portrayed as Uma Thurman in the 1997 Batman and Robin live movie, she became an easily recognizable character for DC fans and general comic fans alike. Cosplaying with a Poison Ivy Costume is a unique character choice that gives the wearer a lot of freedom while still being easily recognizable. Below we have compiled some of the key elements of the Poison Ivy Costume with a few suggestions for a personal twist.
