Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot, better known as the Penguin, is one of Batman’s most enduring villains and is a prominent adversary in Batman’s rogues gallery. The self-proclaimed “Gentleman of Crime” runs a series of legitimate casinos and nightclubs as a front for his nefarious criminal underworld dealings. The part-time informant and full-time foe can be found running his criminal operations from his Gotham nightclub the Iceberg Lounge where he fences stolen goods. An element that makes the Penguin unique among the other Batman villains is that he is completely sane and his motives boil done to simply wealth and power. Though the Penguin can hold his own in combat, what he lacks in size and strength he makes for with superior intellect and access to resources, such as weapons, henchman and assassins, due to his wealth. Though his portrayals sometimes vary, here’s the basics for creating a Penguin costume.
The Penguin is usually depicted as a short, portly and sometimes repugnant looking fellow who sports himself a series of high-tech and weaponized umbrellas. His manner of dress is a cross between gangster-era mobster and that of a member of high society. Keeping with the Penguin theme he typically uses bird-themed vehicles, weapons and other gadgets. In other works the Penguin is sometimes portrayed as an outcast riddled by physical deformities. A popular example of this is in Batman Returns where Danny Devito’s portrayal had such deformities such as a beak-like nose and fingers fused together to form flippers. In the Arkham series the Penguin is portrayed more as mob boss who runs an illegal arms smuggling operation. He doesn’t have any penguin-like mannerisms such as a waddling or squawking but he still does have pointed nose. In this version he has a cockney accent and dresses more like someone from an aristocratic family with fur lined coats and a monocle.
