Mystique born Raven Darkhölme, is one of the most popular X-Men characters gifted with the power of shapeshifting, giving her the ability to look and sound like anyone she makes contact with. Her natural appearance includes blue skin and piercing yellow eyes, making her frightening to the typical person and adding to her origin story of a rejected orphan. Adopted at a young age by the family of Charles Xavier, she grown concealing her true form from the outside world. As depicted in the movies she meets Max Eisenhardt aka Erik Lehnsherr through working with her brother Charles to open the Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, or less formally known as the Xavier Institute. It was meant to be a safe-haven where mutant children could learn to control their powers and to protect them from the outside world. As reports of mutants become more and more public, hostility towards them leads Mystique to join Erik, now under the guise of Magneto to form a more radical group of mutants who are opposed to human integration. Although she is classified as a villain in the Marvel universe she often helps the X-Men under Professor Xavier due to their shared history. Undisputedly one of the main mutants in Marvel’s X-Men world, she becomes the second in command to Magneto in his rebellion movement. The first X-Men comic was published in September 1953 by the dynamic duo of Stand Lee and Jack Kirby. Mystique was not created until 1978 by artist David Cockrum and writer Chris Claremont, ironically first appearing in a Mrs. Marvel comic series.
In the live-action movies Mystique is portrayed by the beautiful actress Rebecca Romijn in the original trilogy of X-Men films. With the new reboot films, she is played as a younger version by oscar winning actress Jennifer Lawrence in X-Men: First Class circa 2011 and X-Men: Days of Future Past circa 2014. As a character, Mystique was ranked number 18 on IGN’s list of The Greatest Comic Book Villains of All Time.
