Originally released in light novel form in 2009, the series gained so much popularity that it has inspired eight manga adaptations, three video games, and two anime TV series. The games are available on various sony platforms. Receiving international commercial success, the franchise has sold over 16 million copies in over seven countries. Among the accolades for this series, the anime has received praise for exploration on the psychological aspects of virtual reality and the concept of MMORPG escapism.
