Jean Grey was one of the first and most popular characters in the X-Men Universe. Born with the power of telekinesis she can move objects with her mind as well as communicate telepathically. She was created as one of the first mutants to hit the comic world by the dynamic duo and premiered in X-Men number one released in 1963. She is discovered by Professor Xavier and his best friend Max Eisenhardt who would become the leader of the opposing group of mutants, going by the name Magneto. With her powers manifesting themselves while she was a child, she was in need of guidance at a young age. Described as calm, caring, nurturing and the mother-figure of the group, this is contrasted by her transformation into the character Phoenix. Created to protect her from the danger of being killed, this ultra powerful alter-ego is nothing like the former Jean Grey character. She is widely accepted as the main female mutant character in the X-Men universe. She has been brilliantly portrayed as both Jean Grey and the deadly Phoenix by actress Famke Janssen in the live-action movie series. This introduced her triangular romance between wolverine and cyclops. Her best friend in both the movies and the comics is the iconic character Storm. In the comics she marries Scott Summers, the original leader of the X-Men group, and fellow member of the original group of mutants created in 1963. Together the have Racher Summers, X-Man, Cable and Stryfe, all genetic mutants along with their parents.
As a character she has been featured in all three original X-Men movies, and the animated series X-Men Evolutions. She is a playable character in X-Men Legends circa 2004, X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse circa 2005, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 circa 2009, Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds circa 2011, Marvel Heroes circa 2013, and Lego Marvel Super Heroes circa 2013. Jean Grey has been casted to be played by Famke Janssen again in her adult role and by Sophie Turner as the younger Jean in the movie X-Men Apocalypse circa 2016. Her accolades include IGN rated Jean Grey #6 on their list of Top 25 X-Men from the past forty years in 2006, and 13th in the Top 100 Comic Book Heroes in 2011. Phoenix, as her own character was ranked 9th in IGN’s “Top 100 Comic Book Villains of All Time” list. As a combination, Jean and Phoenix were ranked third in Comics Buyer’s Guide’s 100 Sexiest Women in Comics list.
