The Imperial Guard, or sometimes known ad the Emperor’s Guard, Royal Guard, or the Dark Honor Guard was comprised of a small group of highly trained warriors. During the time of the Clone Wars they were known as the Red Guard or their nickname the Redrobes because of their iconic ruby red garb. Tasked with the sole job of protecting the head of the Galactic Republic, they were first created under the leadership of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. As such, they were featured as a silent, ominous presence in many scenes of the prequel trilogy. At the time of their creation, members were selected from the most loyal and highly skilled soldiers in the ranks of the Senate Guard. These soldiers were not force-sensitive, and often chosen from the elite unit of Senate Commandos which would make up the Chancellors first private security unit.
After the fall of the Jedi Order and rise of the new Empire they served the Sith Emperor Darth Sidious as his personal body guard, protectors and enforcers. After this transition from the Republic to the Galactic Empire under Emperor Palpatine they were renamed the Imperial Royal Guard. At this point of time they were still non-Force-sensitive soldiers but they were forced to become mentally bonded to the Emperor, making them unwaveringly loyal. As both protectors and soldiers, they were trained to be proficient in multiple weapons and styles of combat. Under the command of Emperor Palpatine they fought in the Great Galactic War, Cold War, and Galactic War with the Republic.
For the purpose of this article we will include the costume and cosplay items that we find for both the Imperial Guard Costume and the Imperial Knight characters, due to their similarity.
