Goku, full name Son Goku is the main character and long-time antagonist of the popular manga and anime series Dragon Ball Z. Created by Akira Toriyama, he drew inspiration for the Goku character from the classic Chinese novel titled Journey to the West. As a character, he was introduced with the first publication of Dragon Ball in Japan’s Shōnen Jump magazine, published December 3, 1984. An energetic, enigmatic young boy with a monkey tail, he lives in a world where searching for the fabled Dragon Balls is an adventure for only the most worthy heroes. Legend tells that the mythical Dragon who resides in the dragon balls can only be released when all seven Dragon Balls are united, and he will grant one wish to the one who gathers the seven orbs. Traveling across his world he meets other iconic characters including Bulma, Gohan, Kuririn and many more. Becoming one of the most widely recognized anime characters of all time, Goku and his Saiyan heritage have pervaded all levels of geek culture. As such, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest anime and manga characters of all time.
