Arguably the most iconic and successful fantasy tales ever written, J.R.R. Tolken cemented his name into the fantasy universe with his novels The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Starting the generation defining tale, The Hobbit was published in 1937, with the Lord of the Rings being written between the years of 1937 and 1949. One of the best selling novels of all time, the series has sold over 150 million copies to date. Centering around the antagonist called the Dark Lord Sauron, the series details his search for the ring of power and the evil powers he amasses that aid in his pursuit. The first installment of the series follows the wise wizard Gandalf the Grey and the main antagonist Bilbo Baggins as they help a group of Dwarves regain their home from the clutches of a deadly dragon. Introducing the ring of power, Biblo finds it deep in the depths of the earth in the clutches of a mournful creature known as Golem. Hearing the call of the ring, he keeps the tiny treasure for himself and a secret from the rest of his fellow travelers. Helping them in their quest, Biblo unwittingly alerts the darker forces in his world that the ring has been found and has its own lust for power and chaos. The Lord of the Rings series again features Gandalf, but this time the main antagonist is Bilbo’s cousin, Frodo Baggins. Other hobbits featured in this better known part of the franchise include Frodo’s best friend Samwise Gamgee, and two cousins, Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took, all respectively known as Sam, Merry and Pippin. As they embarc on a mission to destroy the ring they are joined by the Aragorn the Rider, Gandalf the Grey, Gimli the Dwarf, Legolas the Elf, and Boromir the Man, son of the Ruling Steward Denethor of the realm of Gondor. Their adventure is the sort of tale that defines modern legend.
Creating your own Gimli costume will be a little difficult. Primary costume items include his mass of red hair, viking-esque attire with lots of fur, and his dwarven battle axe. Secondary costume items include his various armor pieces.
