Darth Vader is the villain of a generation. Ranked by the American Film Institute as the third greatest film villain of all time, he was only outdone Hannibal Lecter and Norman Bates. Created by the legend himself, George Lucas, he is one of the only characters to be present in all six Star Wars Movies. When the original trilogy premiering in 1977, he was quickly established as an overarching presence of evil in the Star Wars galaxy. Literally blowing up planets because he could, Darth Vader was an enigmatic colossal that fans could not get enough of. Revealed throughout the original trilogy that he is the apprentice to the ultimate evil Darth Sidiuos and ruler of the galactic empire, our band of heroes and rebels, Luke, Leia, and Han Solo set out to defeat the two Sith Lords. In perhaps the greatest reveal in cinematic history, the words “I am your father” spoken from Vader to young Luke were immortalized in cinema history. Darth Vader as a Sith Lord was present in Episode IV: A New Hope circa 1977, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back circa 1980, and finally in Episode VI: Return of the Jedi circa 1983. A protagonist with a dark side, Darth Vader was present in the prequel trilogy as his pre-sith persona of Anakin Skywalker. He played an integral role in Episode I: The Phantom Menace circa 1999 as a child, Episode II: Attack of the Clones circa 2002 as a Jedi Padawan, and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith circa 2005 as the fallen Jedi Knight and the newly created Sith Lord Vader. Anakin was also present as a Jedi General and Master of Asoka Tano in the hit animated series Star Wars: Clone Wars. Also again in the new animated series Star Wars: Rebels as the Darth Vader figure.
The historic saga continues with the acquisition of Lucas Arts by Disney Studios and the announcement of another trilogy beginning with Episode VII: The Force Awakens circa 2015. It has been alluded to that Vader returns, as a force ghost or in another form we are yet to know.
