James “Jim” Gordon, the police commissioner of Gotham, was first introduced in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. He was the first supporting character to Batman ever introduced and has remained an iconic ally ever sense. Commissioner Gordon is known as one of the few good cops in Gotham and is deeply committed to ridding the city of crime and corruption. Despite Gordon being at odds with Batman’s vigilantism he finds himself reliant on Batman and develops a deep respect for the Dark Knight. He is often depicted as a character with a strong moral conviction and a cautious optimism about what Gotham could be one day. Commissioner Gordon is also commonly depicted as the one who uses the Batsignal to summon Batman when he needs help on a case. He is also the father of Barbara Gordon who would later become the first Batgirl and eventually becomes Oracle after being wounded by the Joker. Here’s what you’ll need for a Commissioner Gordon costume.
Cosplaying as Commissioner Jim Gordon is relatively simple. To successfully create your own interpretation of the most infamous cop in the DC universe, you will need to channel your inner 1940’s mob-busting detective. Primary costume items include his long tan rain coat, white dress shirt, tie, choice of khaki pants or plane black suit and black rim glasses. Secondary costume items include his iconic old-style prop revolver, a thick cigar as seen in the animated series and black fedora.
