Similar to other characters in the DC Universe, the super villain identity of Captain Boomerang actually pertains to two individuals, George “Digger” Harkness and his son Owen Mercer. The first Captain Boomerang, Harkness was raised impoverished, the illegitimate son of an American soldier and Australian national. He became proficient in carving boomerangs and was even hired by a toy company to sell the Australian icon, unbenounced to him, run by his biological father. Ridiculed by audiences of the toy show the boomerang inspired his creation of a criminal persona. Introduced as an enemy of the Flash, Harkness almost killed the hot-footed hero before having his boomerang turned against him and being arrested. Eventually joining the Rogues, Captain Boomerang made several more complex variations of his boomerangs (nothing like the batarang, nope nada no similarities).
Potentially being a satirically comical character to cosplay as, a Captain Boomerang costume comes with a plethora of behind the scenes jokes. Not even having an Australian accent until the 1980’s Harkness, during his time in the Suicide Squad he continually referred to his African teammate as “abbo.” Referred to as the class clown, he was kept around because of his competence in battle. Harkness was able to reach out to his son Owen shortly before being killed by Jack Drake, father of Tim Drake. Taken in by the Rogues, he was welcomed by Captain Cold, brother to Golden Glider, presumably Owen’s mother. His heritage is actually much more complex, but that’s a story for another character costume. Unlike his father, Owen would work closely with Tim Drake, the Robin of that time and become close friends with Kara Zor-el, then supergirl. Appearing in the New 52, Owen remains as the current Captain Boomerang establishing the most recent Captain Boomerang Costume.
All of this being said, you cosplay savvy people have another choice between two generations of Captain Boomerang Costumes.
