Bender is the somewhat crude comedic relief in the hit show Futurama. Made in Mexico the show refers to his “swarthy Latin charm” when seducing attractive she-bots. Created as a “bender unit” or 1729, he is a robot who questioned his existence and basic programming to bend metal beams until the end of time. Acting as the anti-hero of the Planet Express team, he is described by his co-workers as an “alcoholic, whore-mongering, chain-smoking gambler.” Often seen with his signature cigar, Bender has been the shows constant “devil on the shoulder” character. Becoming Fry’s best friend and roommate, Bender is a memorable fan favorite for his abrupt humor and lack of moral compass.
Aiding the cast of Planet Express delivery service to win dozens of Annie Awards and several Emmys’ Bender certainly brings character to the shows otherwise mostly human cast. Voiced by the super talented Billy West, who voices many of the characters on Futurama, Bender embodies West’s inner booze hound. Bender is easily quotable, inspiring fan favorite lines including “There. This’ll teach those filthy bastards who’s lovable,” “Stupid can opener! You killed my father, and now you’ve come back for me!” and inspiring our all time favorite “I’m going to build my own heaven with blackjack and hookers!”
