A Beetlejuice group costume works best when each person chooses a distinct silhouette. Start with the black-and-white striped suit, Lydia’s dramatic clothing, or the Maitlands’ everyday outfits, then add one recognizable detail. This guide focuses on looks inspired by the original film; choose a specific scene before mixing pieces from different versions.
Choose your character
- Beetlejuice: black-and-white striped jacket and trousers, a white shirt, dark tie and disheveled pale hair. The stripes carry the outfit, so prioritize those before buying props. See the individual Beetlejuice guide.
- Lydia Deetz: choose either a black gothic outfit or the red wedding look. A black dress and broad-brimmed hat make a practical wardrobe-based interpretation; a red dress with a lightweight veil creates a different, more elaborate silhouette. Use the Lydia guide for the character breakdown.

Build the group in five steps
- Pick one reference per person. Save it before shopping so the dress, hair and accessories belong to the same outfit.
- Try existing clothes first. Adam and Barbara can be assembled from separates; Lydia’s black look can start with a dress already in your wardrobe.
- Make the main shape readable. For a casual striped-suit interpretation, attach removable white fabric strips to dark clothing. Test the attachment on a hidden area and avoid covering closures or pockets.
- Add hair and one accent. A wig is optional when the clothing already establishes the character. Keep a veil or hat clear of your eyes.
- Do a group dress rehearsal. Walk, sit and take a photo together. Adjust long hems, loose strips and anything that catches on another person’s outfit.
Couples, families and optional props
Adam and Barbara make a coordinated two-person choice. Beetlejuice and Lydia offer a stronger contrast; all four work together without matching identical costumes. Let each wearer choose a version they find comfortable rather than forcing the same level of makeup or a full-head mask.
A small handmade book cover can suggest a supernatural handbook without buying a collectible. Keep it lightweight and easy to carry. Elaborate monster-face masks are optional and can make talking, vision and heat management harder; ordinary Maitland outfits remain a valid interpretation.
