Beast Boy, real name Garfield Mark “Gar” Logan aka changeling, is a superhero member in the DC Universe. He was created by Arnold Drake and Bob Brown, first appearing in the comic series Doom Patrol number 99, published November 1965. For the 1990’s generation, we most commonly associate him with the hit animated show Teen Titans where he was the lovable comic relief. Along with his close friends and fellow young super-heroes Raven, Cyborg, Robin, Starfire, Kid Flash and Wonder Girl, they tackle foes of epic proportion. And, no, were not just talking about his romantic interest, Raven’s demonic father. As a child, Beast Boy was born to two advanced scientists who frequently experimented with “reverse evolution.” In theory, they sought to bring out the more primal attributes of modern species. When Young Garfield came down with a rare illness, known as Sakutia, his parents were left with very few options. They found that this disease was lethal to every known mammalian species except for a rare breed of African green monkey. His father injects him with a serum to turn him into this West African green monkey temporarily, but it has the unforeseen side effect of permanently changing his hair and skin green. Along with this inhuman alteration, Garfield finds that he has the ability to change into any animal that he desires. After his parents die in a fatal boating accident, he is guilt-ridden and seeks out to become a crimefighter for good, taking on the persona of Beast Boy.
