A relatively new villain to the comic world, Anarky premiered in DC Comics in 1989. Created by Alan Grant, the writer drew inspiration from previous work on the Judge Dredd storyboard. Told to create a cross between the Black Spy from Spy vs. Spy and V from V for Vendetta, Grant produced what would become Anarky. Focusing on political and philosophical turmoil, this character became a charged fan favorite. Lonnie Machin was known as a child prodigy, even initially tricking readers to believe he was an adult. Throughout his career he embodied values in antimilitarism, anti-statism, environmentalism, economic inequality, and political corruption. Intended to only be a one-time appearance, Anarky was such a popular character that he became a recurring villain in the Batman universe. Spurring his own spin-off set of comics in the 90’s, his popularity waned until being featured in the Batman Game series, Arkham Origins. This appearance renewed his popularity causing Anarky to be written into the New 52 series. With the political nature of this character creating an Anarky costume will get you recognized in any con.
